Parts of speech defined as every word used in a sentence occupies a position and fulfils a function. The words in a sentence are, therefore, divided into clauses, called Parts of Speech.
There are eight Parts of Speech:
I. NOUN
Definition
A noun is used to name people, places, objects or ideas.
Examples:
(i) Adnan is an intelligent young man.
(Nouns: Adnan, man)
(ii) Paris is the capital of France.
(Nouns: Paris, capital, France)
(iii) Honesty is the best policy.
(Nouns: honesty., policy)
(iv) The doctor saved the life of the child.
Nouns: ( doctor, life, child)
(v) Wasim played a gallant innings for the team.
(Nouns: Wasim, innings, team)
2. PRONOUN:
DEFINITION
A pronoun is used in place of a noun.
Also it defines noun.
Examples
It has cost me 100. (Pronouns: it)
(ii) She gave me a nice gift.
(Pronouns she, me)
(ii) It is her sixteenth birthday.
(Pronouns: it, her)
3. ADJECTIVE
DEFINITION
An adjective is used to describe or qualify a noun.
It also uses to describe the quality of a noun.
Examples
I have written two chapters of this book.
(Adjective: two, this)
(ii) She is a pretty child.
(Adjective: pretty)
(iii) It is a tall tree.
(Adjective tall)
(iv) Muhammad Ali was the greatest leader.
(Adjective: the greatest)
4. VERB:
DEFINITION
We use a verb to describe an action.
Also verb is known as an action word.
Rashid went to UK.
Verb (went)
He goes to office every day.
Verb (goes)
5. ADVERB
DEFINITION
Adverb is used to qualify a verb by telling us how.
Why, when or where the action taken place. It is also used
to add to the meaning of an adjective, adverb, a preposition or a conjunction.
So how, when, why and where are adverbs.
Such as
He was walking quickly. (adverb quickly)
(i) I am going now. (Adverb: now)
ii) He is a brilliant young lady.
(Adverb: brilliant)
(iv) He signaled the moment he saw the car.
(Adverb: the moment)
A verb is used to describe an action.
(i) Rashid went to Karachi.
(Verb: went)
(ii) He goes to office every day.
(Verb: goes)
(ii!) She will not tell a lie.
(Verb: will, tell)
(iv) I had done my duty.
(Verb: had done )
6. PREPOSITION:
DEFINITION
A preposition is used to show the relation of one thing
to another. It is a word placed before a noun or a pronoun to
show in what relation the person or a thing denoted by it
also it stands in relation to something else.
It also shows the position of any thing.
Examples
Such as
(i) We went about the world.
(Preposition: about)
(i) We take tea in the afternoon.
(Preposition: in)
ii) She sent the parcel by post.
(Preposition: by)
iv) The Kings won with ease.
(Preposition: with)
(v) It is a book of great value.
(Preposition: of)
(vi) For one enemy he has a hundred friends.
(Preposition: for)
(vii) From what I know of him, I hesitate to trust him.
(Preposition: from)
7. CONJUNCTION:
DEFINITION
A conjunction is a single word or groups of
words use for one another.
Examples.
(1) He could not jump the wall, though he tried again
and again.
(Conjunction: though, and)
Such as
(ii) He squandered all his wealth after the death of his
father.
(Conjunction: after)
(ii) He and his family left for Murree yesterday.
(Conjunction: and)
8. INTERJECTION:
DEFINITION
An interjection is the express of some sudden rush of
feeling or excitement.
It also shows the sorrows and joys.
Such as Happiness and sadness.
Examples:
1) Bravo my son, you have done excellent job of
work.
(Interjection: Bravo)
(i) Alas I we have lost the match.
Interjection: Alas)
(ii) Hurrah we have won the match.
(Interjection: Hurrah)
SUMMARY
Note: Words perform various functions in a sentence.
When one word is performing a function, it is a
part of speech. While it is doing the other, it is an
other part oi speech.
